Facial mimicry is independent of stimulus format: Evidence for facial mimicry of stick figures and photographs

چکیده

The present research investigated facial mimicry of the basic emotions joy, anger, and sadness in response to stimuli different formats. Specifically, an electromyography study, 120 participants rated expressions joyful, angry, sad faces presented as photographs or stick figures while muscle activity was measured. Using both frequentist Bayesian approaches hypothesis testing, we found strong support for a effect: Participants showed higher zygomaticus major orbicularis oculi (smiling) towards joyful faces, they corrugator supercilii (frowning) angry faces. Although more abstract less interesting stimuli, effect equally independent format which were (photographs figures). Additionally, enhanced emotion recognition compared photographs, which, however, unrelated mimicry. findings suggest that occurs varying their abstractness might be robust social-cognitive influences than previously assumed.

Facial expression arousal level modulates facial mimicry.

We investigated the effect of facial expression arousal level and mode of presentation on facial mimicry. High- and low-arousal facial expressions indicating pleasant and unpleasant emotions were presented both statically and dynamically. Participants' facial electromyographic (EMG) reactions were recorded from the zygomatic major and corrugator supercilii muscles. Stronger zygomatic major musc...

Rapid Facial Mimicry In Geladas

Rapid facial mimicry (RFM) is an automatic response, in which individuals mimic others' expressions. RFM, only demonstrated in humans and apes, is grounded in the automatic perception-action coupling of sensorimotor information occurring in the mirror neuron system. In humans, RFM seems to reflect the capacity of individuals to empathize with others. Here, we demonstrated that, during play, RFM...

How reward modulates mimicry: EMG evidence of greater facial mimicry of more rewarding happy faces.

Spontaneous mimicry is a marker of empathy. Conditions characterized by reduced spontaneous mimicry (e.g., autism) also display deficits in sensitivity to social rewards. We tested if spontaneous mimicry of socially rewarding stimuli (happy faces) depends on the reward value of stimuli in 32 typical participants. An evaluative conditioning paradigm was used to associate different reward values ...

Towards Facial Mimicry for a Virtual Human

Mimicking others’ facial expressions is believed to be important in making virtual humans as more natural and believable. As result of an empirical study conducted with a virtual human a large face repertoire of about 6000 faces arranged in Pleasure Arousal Dominance (PAD-) space with respect to two dominance values (dominant vs. submissive) was obtained. Each face in the face repertoire consis...

Facial mimicry in its social setting

In interpersonal encounters, individuals often exhibit changes in their own facial expressions in response to emotional expressions of another person. Such changes are often called facial mimicry. While this tendency first appeared to be an automatic tendency of the perceiver to show the same emotional expression as the sender, evidence is now accumulating that situation, person, and relationsh...
